Rick Derringer, the acclaimed guitarist and singer best known for the 1965 chart-topping hit “Hang On Sloopy,” has died at the age of 77. His passing was confirmed by longtime friend and caretaker Tony Wilson, who shared that Derringer was surrounded by his wife, Jenda and Wilson at the time of his death on May 26 in Ormond Beach, Florida. While the specific cause of death was not immediately disclosed, it was later reported that Derringer’s heart suddenly gave out following a recent triple bypass surgery, and he died peacefully after being taken off life support.

Derringer’s musical journey began in his teens when he formed The McCoys, the band that propelled him to fame with “Hang On Sloopy,” a song that quickly soared to number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. After four years touring with The McCoys, Derringer joined forces with Johnny Winter in 1969, forming Johnny Winter And, and later became a member of Edgar Winter’s White Trash. He contributed to the Edgar Winter Group’s celebrated “Roadwork” EP and played a pivotal role in producing the hit single “Frankenstein” in 1972.

In 1973, Derringer launched his solo career with the album All American Boy, featuring the enduring rock anthem “Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo.” Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, he was a fixture in New York’s rock scene, collaborating with a diverse roster of artists including Steely Dan, Barbra Streisand, Alice Cooper, and “Weird Al” Yankovic. Derringer also wrote and produced “Real American,” famously used as the entrance theme for wrestling icon Hulk Hogan, cementing his influence far beyond traditional rock circles.

Derringer’s legacy is marked by his extraordinary versatility as a guitarist, producer, and songwriter.
