Nintendo is set to release the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025, marking a significant upgrade to its hybrid console line. The Switch 2 boasts a 7.9-inch LCD screen with 1080p resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate in handheld mode, and supports up to 4K at 60fps when docked. Powered by a custom Nvidia Tegra T239 processor and equipped with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM, it offers enhanced performance for both new and existing titles.
A notable shift is the introduction of "Game-Key Cards," physical cards that serve as licenses for digital game downloads, moving away from traditional cartridges. While first-party Nintendo games will still come on cartridges containing actual game data, many third-party publishers may opt for game-key cards—physical licenses that trigger a digital download of the full game.
The Switch 2 maintains backward compatibility with most Nintendo Switch games, though some titles may not be fully supported. Enhanced features for Nintendo 64 games, such as a rewind function and CRT filters, are exclusive to the new console, enhancing the retro gaming experience.
At launch, the Switch 2 will debut with titles like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza, the latter being the first major 3D Donkey Kong game since 1999. The console will be available in two packages: a standard version priced at €469.99 and a bundle including a digital copy of Mario Kart World for €509.99. Pre-orders began on April 5, 2025, and the console will be available in most territories on the release date. Nintendo has also announced a series of "Nintendo Switch 2 Experience" events in cities worldwide, allowing fans to try the console firsthand.
