In a revelation that has captivated the entertainment world, actress Mariska Hargitay disclosed in her new documentary, My Mom Jayne, that her biological father is Nelson Sardelli, a Brazilian-born singer and comedian of Italian descent. This announcement challenges the long-held belief that bodybuilder and actor Mickey Hargitay was her father. Sardelli, born on September 30, 1934, enjoyed a vibrant career as a Las Vegas entertainer and appeared in films such as Myra Breckinridge and The Professionals. He was also known for his philanthropic efforts, notably organizing the annual "Starshine" fundraiser in Atlantic City for mentally disabled children.
In the early 1960s, Sardelli had a brief but significant relationship with actress Jayne Mansfield, Mariska's mother. Although Mansfield reconciled with Mickey Hargitay before Mariska's birth in 1964, the question of paternity lingered. Mariska recounted discovering a photo of Sardelli in her twenties and feeling an immediate connection. When she confronted Mickey, he denied any alternative paternity, and the subject was never revisited before his death in 2006.
At age 30, Mariska sought out Sardelli during one of his performances in Atlantic City. Their meeting was emotional; Sardelli reportedly said, "I've been waiting 30 years for this moment." Initially, Mariska maintained a distance, emphasizing her loyalty to Mickey. Over time, however, she developed a relationship with Sardelli and his family, including her half-sisters, Giovanna and Pietra. Today, at 90, Sardelli resides in Las Vegas. He was married to Fledia Sardelli for 47 years until her passing in 2012. Fledia was a dedicated advocate for the mentally challenged and played a pivotal role in legislative advancements in Nevada.
Mariska's documentary not only sheds light on her personal journey but also honors the complexities of family and identity. My Mom Jayne is set to premiere on HBO on June 27, 2025, offering viewers an intimate look into the life of Jayne Mansfield and the hidden truths that shaped Mariska's life.
