A suspected gunman and a DeKalb County police officer were killed in a shooting near the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Emory University in Atlanta on August 8, 2025. The incident began with reports of an active shooter at a CVS Pharmacy located in Emory Point, close to the CDC headquarters and the university campus. Atlanta Police responded quickly to the active shooter alerts, which prompted campus-wide lockdowns and shelter-in-place orders. Emory University advised people to "RUN, HIDE, FIGHT" and avoid the area during the crisis.
The suspect was located on the second floor of a building across from the CDC campus, where law enforcement found him deceased from a gunshot wound. It remains unclear whether the gunshot causing the suspect's death was self-inflicted or from police action. Three other firearms were also recovered at the scene, and the suspect was reported to be armed with a long gun. The identity of the shooter has been speculated in social media as Silas Kruger, but this has not been officially confirmed by authorities.
Tragically, a DeKalb County police officer responding to the active shooter call was fatally shot. This officer was critically injured at the scene and later died despite emergency medical treatment. DeKalb Police Chief Gregory Padrick expressed profound sorrow over the loss, noting that the officer was a dedicated father of two, with another child on the way. Officials have asked for privacy for the officer’s family during this difficult time. No other injuries among civilians have been reported, and the public threat has been declared over.
The shooting caused damage to at least four buildings at the CDC's Roybal campus, with multiple windows bearing bullet holes. CDC Director Susan Monarez confirmed the extensive damage and stated that safety remains the highest priority. The FBI and local authorities have joined forces in the investigation, though the motive behind the attack remains unknown as the inquiry is still in its preliminary stages. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp praised first responders for their bravery and called for public prayers for those affected. The broader impact has caused concern among CDC employees and Emory community members, many of whom reported fear and uncertainty during the event.
