The controversial statement by the Yunus government in Bangladesh regarding Durga Puja has sparked deep resentment among the Hindu community. This statement comes at a time when the important festival of Durga Puja is repeatedly targeted by extremist groups and local authorities. According to recent reports, the Hindu community has been banned from holding open worship and from performing idol immersions. In many places, protests have erupted and strict warnings have been issued over setting up pandals, which has muted the festive spirit and raised questions about religious freedom.
Government officials under Yunus have advised that all Durga Puja activities should be paused during namaz and azaan. As a result of this directive, the Hindu community must strictly regulate the timing of worship. Many puja committees have received explicit instructions that no hymns, rituals, or public religious activities can occur five minutes before azaan until namaz is completed. While the administration has promised security, most temples and pandals are now conducting worship behind closed doors or in halls due to threats from extremist groups.
This atmosphere has caused a deep sense of fear and anger among Hindus. Social workers and puja organisers have stated that the government’s statements and rules have hurt Hindu religious freedom and sentiments. Recurring incidents of violence, idol desecration, threats, and psychological pressure on minorities have not ceased. The growing number of incidents has increased concerns not only about the community’s safety but also their social status and religious rights.
Many members of the Hindu community have condemned the Yunus government’s controversial statement, calling it “a decision that hurts our sentiments.” They said there is neither the same freedom nor enthusiasm in this year’s Durga Puja. Restrictions on temple worship, indoor events, and bans on sound systems have made the whole community uncomfortable. Major Hindu organisations have demanded that the government reconsider its policies and ensure the safety and religious freedom of all minorities across the nation.
