A crucial meeting was held late Thursday night at Shital Niwas (the presidential residence) in Nepal amid a political crisis regarding the formation of an interim government. The meeting was chaired by President Ram Chandra Paudel and attended by Army Chief Ashok Raj Sigdel, Supreme Court Chief Justice Prakash Singh Raut, Speaker Devraj Ghimire, National Assembly Chairman Narayan Dahal, former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, and other senior leaders and constitutional experts. With ongoing political instability, the need for an interim government had been felt for some time, and during the meeting, Sushila Karki's name emerged as the leading candidate for the prime minister's role.
It is believed that after prolonged discussions through the night, all major parties agreed on making Sushila Karki the interim Prime Minister of Nepal. Beyond this, the constitutionally required procedure, parliamentary dissolution, and scheduling of general elections within the next six months were also thoroughly discussed. Sources indicate that support for Karki grew even among Gen-Z groups and youth leaders. Although some disagreements over her name surfaced, the deadlock was negotiated and resolved through military and constitutional channels.
Seventy-two-year-old Sushila Karki, Nepal's first female Chief Justice, has long represented judicial impartiality and administrative integrity. President Ram Chandra Paudel also met separately during the day with leaders of major political parties, including Maoist chief Prachanda, Nepali Congress Vice-President Purna Bahadur Khadka, General Secretary Gagan Thapa, and former PM Madhav Nepal. Though full consensus wasn't reached on dissolving the parliament, Karki's candidacy garnered wide support amid instability, with youth advocates preferring her over older politicians.
Nepal's political situation has remained tense for months, with demands for an interim government intensifying after the resignation of the Oli government and widespread Gen-Z protests. These protests and demonstrations accelerated the transition process, positioning former Chief Justice Sushila Karki as the strongest contender. Following the late-night strategy meeting involving the president, army chief, and other officials, consensus was reached on her candidacy. Reports suggest she may take the oath today and lead the country through elections within six months under her stewardship.
