The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms and heavy rain across parts of central and southern England and Wales on Saturday, 7 June 2025. The warning is in effect from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with potential for gusty winds, hail, and frequent lightning.
The warning encompasses a broad swath of the country, including southern England, the Midlands, and parts of South Wales. Major cities such as London, Birmingham, and Cardiff are within the affected zones. The Met Office cautions that while many areas will experience showers, not all locations will see thunderstorms.
Up to 40mm in a few hours, surpassing the 32.8mm total recorded in May, which was nearly half the monthly average. Chief meteorologist Dan Suri stated there could be 10-15mm of rain in under an hour, with some localized areas getting 30-40mm over several hours. Due to the localized and fast-changing nature of thunderstorms, predicting exact locations remains difficult.
The Met Office warns that the anticipated weather conditions may lead to: Localized flooding of homes, businesses, and roads. Disruption to public transport services. Power outages due to lightning strikes. Hazardous driving conditions from surface water and reduced visibility. Authorities advise the public to exercise caution, particularly when traveling, and to stay informed through official channels.
While Saturday is expected to be stormy, Sunday will likely be drier for most regions, with a chance of showers primarily in northern and eastern England. Temperatures are forecast to rise next week, potentially reaching 25°C in London and 23°C in Manchester by Wednesday. The Met Office urges residents in the affected areas to remain vigilant and prepared for sudden changes in weather conditions. It is recommended to: Secure outdoor items that could be displaced by strong winds. Avoid driving through flooded roads. Stay indoors during periods of lightning and heavy rain. Monitor local news and weather updates for the latest information.
