In the aftermath of the tragic Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025, which took the lives of 26 people, India and Australia have stepped up their joint efforts to tackle terrorism. During the ninth round of India-Australia Defence Policy Talks in New Delhi, both countries highlighted the importance of a careful and balanced approach to these threats, aiming to prevent further escalation while addressing the underlying issues that fuel terrorism.
Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles, on his visit to India, strongly denounced the attack and expressed his support for India in its battle against terrorism. In talks with Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, the two leaders agreed to bolster their cooperation in counter-terrorism initiatives, reiterating the need for a measured response to such dangers. Their discussions also covered ways to strengthen strategic and defense ties, including collaboration in defense industries, cyber technologies, and maritime security.
In reaction to the Pahalgam attack, India initiated Operation Sindoor, targeting several terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir. This operation involved the Army, Navy, and Air Force, utilizing precision munitions to minimize civilian and military casualties and avoid escalation. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the strikes as acts of war and cautioned about potential retaliation.
Looking ahead, India and Australia are gearing up for the upcoming 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue in Australia later this year. This meeting is anticipated to further cement their defense partnership, focusing on long-term strategies to combat terrorism and enhance regional security. The collaboration between these two nations underscores their shared commitment to fighting terrorism and fostering stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
