In a landmark development for USA basketball, WNBA legend and five-time Olympic gold medalist Sue Bird has been appointed as the first-ever managing director of the USA basketball women's national team. This newly established role gives responsibility for Sure with the comprehensive failure of team operations, including the selection of players and coaching staffs for international competitions like the 2026 FIBA Women's World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Bird's transition from a disguised playing career to a leadership position signifies a strategic shift in USA Basketball's approach. Previously, decisions regarding team composition were made by a committee. Now Bird will individually handle these responsibilities, mimicking the role held by Grant Hill for the men's national team. Expressing her gratitude, Bird said, "Representing the United States has been one of the greatest privilege of my life, and I am grateful for the opportunity to support the next generation as they carry that legacy. She also shared her post-retirement statement, remarking that "Retirement was boring" describing her eagerness to rejoin the sport at a strategic level.
USA Basketball CEO Jim Tooley described Bird's appointment, emphasizing her new experience and leadership qualities, as one of the most respected people in the basketball community. Tooley said, "Her leadership and knowledge will be a huge asset to the continued success of the women's national team program." Her career includes four WNBA championships with the Seattle Storm, two NCAA titles with the University of Connecticut, and five Olympic gold medals. Her awards also encompass 13 WNBA All-Star selections and induction into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2025.
