The Dutch government has officially fallen apart after Geert Wilders' far-right Party for Freedom (PVV) decided to pull out of the ruling coalition. This move came after coalition partners turned down Wilders' tough immigration proposals, which included plans to strip dual-passport holders of their nationality and enforce strict asylum regulations. Prime Minister Dick Schoof, who had been at the helm since July 2024, quickly resigned following Wilders' announcement, calling the collapse "irresponsible and unnecessary."
The coalition, which included PVV, VVD, NSC, and BBB, had barely lasted a year, making it one of the shortest in Dutch history. This marks the second time in recent years that a government has crumbled over immigration disputes, the first being Prime Minister Mark Rutte's resignation in 2023 due to similar issues.
Wilders' exit from the coalition has drawn sharp criticism from former allies, who claim he is putting his personal political ambitions ahead of the country's stability. Analysts believe that Wilders might have engineered this collapse to regain some political ground, especially since his party's popularity has been waning. Now, the Netherlands is staring down a period of political uncertainty, with new elections expected to take place in October or November 2025.
This political turmoil comes at a crucial moment, with NATO commitments on the horizon and growing European concerns about migration and security. The country is now bracing for new elections and the challenge of forming a stable government.
