Sean “Diddy” Combs was acquitted Wednesday of the most serious charges in his high-profile federal trial, including sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy, after three days of jury deliberations. The unanimous verdict, delivered by a jury of eight men and four women, spared the music mogul a potential life sentence. However, Combs, 55, was convicted on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution, a federal felony under the Mann Act, which carries a maximum penalty of ten years per count.
The prosecution’s case centered on allegations that Combs used his wealth and influence to coerce his ex-girlfriends, singer Cassie Ventura and another woman identified as “Jane,” into participating in drug-fueled sexual encounters with paid male sex workers. Testimony described elaborate “Freak Offs,” with prosecutors claiming Combs orchestrated and sometimes filmed the acts. Surveillance footage from 2016, showing Combs assaulting Ventura in a hotel hallway, was presented as evidence of coercion, but the defense argued it depicted a personal dispute unrelated to the sex trafficking allegations.
Combs’ legal team did not call any witnesses, instead maintaining that all sexual activity was consensual and that his past violence, while acknowledged, did not rise to the level of the charges brought against him. After the verdict, Combs was visibly emotional, holding his hands in a prayer gesture and thanking the jurors before embracing his attorney, Teny Geragos. His lead counsel, Marc Agnifilo, requested Combs’ release ahead of sentencing, citing the acquittals on the most severe counts.
The mixed outcome of the trial marks a dramatic turning point for Combs, whose career as a music executive, fashion entrepreneur, and reality TV star now hangs in the balance. The sentencing judge will determine the length of Combs’ prison term, with the convictions still exposing him to up to 20 years behind bars.
