Vietnam has officially joined BRICS as a "Partner Country," a move that was recently announced by Brazil, the current chair of this influential group. This exciting development, confirmed by Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, allows the Southeast Asian nation to engage more closely with BRICS initiatives and play a role in shaping a more inclusive and representative global order. The new "Partner Country" status, which was established during the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024, provides a formal pathway for deeper cooperation without requiring full membership in the core group that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, along with newer members like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE, Ethiopia, and Iran.
As the tenth BRICS partner country, joining others like Belarus, Bolivia, and Malaysia, Vietnam's entry highlights its growing geopolitical and economic significance on the world stage. With a vibrant economy and a population close to 100 million, Vietnam is increasingly recognized as a key player in Asia, deeply integrated into global value chains. This partnership aligns perfectly with Vietnam's long-standing foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, and diversifying its international relations, showcasing its commitment to fostering international solidarity and comprehensive multilateralism grounded in respect for international law.
This strategic alignment is set to bring mutual benefits. For Vietnam, it opens up opportunities for enhanced cooperation with the BRICS bloc, including potential access to financing from the New Development Bank for infrastructure projects and involvement in discussions on economic development, trade, and technology. For BRICS, Vietnam's inclusion adds significant economic weight and innovative potential, particularly bolstering the bloc's strategic position in Southeast Asia, a region that is becoming increasingly important geopolitically.
Vietnam's proactive engagement in various multilateral mechanisms, including the United Nations, ASEAN, APEC, and expanded G7 and G20 forums, has consistently contributed to regional and global peace, stability, and development. Its new status within BRICS further solidifies its role as a responsible and active member of the international community, advocating for the amplified voice and role of developing nations in global governance.
