A devastating tram collision at Strasbourg's central station has left at least 30 people injured, according to authorities. The crash occurred on Saturday when two trams collided, with one reportedly switching tracks and hitting a stationary tram. Videos and photos shared on social media captured the chaotic scenes, with smoke rising and alarms sounding.
Eyewitnesses described the moment of impact. Johan, one witness, told AFP that he saw one of the trams reversing at high speed. "We heard a big impact, a big bang," he said. Another eyewitness reported that the doors of the tram flew off upon impact. Strasbourg's mayor, Jeanne Barseghian, urged people to wait for the results of the investigation into the cause of the accident.
The Bas-Rhin region's Fire and Rescue Service reported that the injuries were mostly trauma-related, including scalp wounds, clavicle fractures, and knee sprains. Around 100 additional people were treated for minor injuries. The service's director, Rene Cellier, praised the emergency response, noting that the situation "could have been much more serious."
An investigation into the cause of the accident has been opened, with authorities working to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision. The two tram drivers were reportedly shaken but uninjured.
