Samsung Electronics has unveiled its slimmest flagship smartphone yet, the Galaxy S25 Edge, as it intensifies its rivalry with Apple in the premium device market. The S25 Edge stands out with a body thickness of just 5.8 millimeters and a weight of 163 grams, making it Samsung’s thinnest and among the most portable flagships to date. The device features a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X QHD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate, protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2, ensuring durability alongside its ultra-slim design. The launch is strategically timed, coming months ahead of Apple’s anticipated thinner iPhone, in a bid to attract consumers seeking sleek, high-performance smartphones.
Samsung has targeted younger consumers, especially those in their 20s and 30s, who increasingly demand devices that are easier to carry without sacrificing power or features. To achieve the S25 Edge’s slim profile, Samsung re-engineered core components, including the printed circuit board and thermal systems, reducing internal bulk while maintaining flagship-level performance. The S25 Edge is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy processor, paired with 12GB RAM, and runs Android 15 with One UI 7, offering robust multitasking and AI-driven capabilities.
A highlight of the S25 Edge is its advanced artificial intelligence features, including multimodal AI that enables real-time interaction through both camera and voice inputs. This allows users to ask questions and control functions seamlessly, reflecting Samsung’s focus on integrating smart technology into everyday use. The camera system is also a major selling point, boasting a 200MP wide lens for professional-grade photography in a slim, pocketable form factor.
Samsung’s decision to launch the S25 Edge ahead of Apple’s next iPhone is widely seen by analysts as a calculated move to capture market share from users prioritizing design and portability. The S25 Edge will be available starting May 23 in South Korea and May 30 in the United States, rolling out to over 30 countries globally, with a starting price of $1,099. Samsung recently reclaimed the top spot in global smartphone shipments, holding a 20% market share in Q1 2025, just ahead of Apple’s 19%, though the company has cautioned that future shipments may face challenges from potential tariff risks.
