On the evening of Sunday, May 25, 2025, a mass shooting occurred aboard the Hurricane II party boat in Little River, South Carolina, approximately 20 miles northeast of Myrtle Beach. The incident took place around 9:30 p.m. as the boat was docked at a marina along the Intracoastal Waterway. According to the Horry County Police Department (HCPD), at least 11 individuals were hospitalized following the shooting. Some victims were transported by emergency services, while others arrived at hospitals independently.
Authorities believe the shooting was an isolated incident and have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat. The motive behind the shooting remains unknown, and no arrests have been made as of now. Investigators are considering the possibility of multiple shooters being involved. In a separate, unrelated incident, a North Myrtle Beach police officer responding to a different call accidentally discharged his weapon, sustaining a leg injury. The officer is currently in stable condition.
The Hurricane II is operated by the Little River Fishing Fleet and was hosting a DJ-party cruise at the time of the incident. The boat had just completed its three-hour cruise and was docked when the gunfire erupted. This shooting adds to a series of violent events that marred the Memorial Day weekend across the United States. In nearby Atlantic Beach, a separate disturbance at a cultural event led to a crowd stampede, injuring 12 people.
The Horry County Police Department is actively investigating the incident and urges anyone with information to come forward. The marina remains closed as the investigation continues. Authorities have commended emergency responders and assisting agencies for their swift actions during the crisis.
