During the call, PM Modi extended a formal invitation to Dr. Ramgoolam for an early visit to India, highlighting the desire to further strengthen the Enhanced Strategic Partnership between the two nations. Both leaders agreed to remain in close contact and emphasized their commitment to deepening cooperation across a broad spectrum of areas, including development, capacity building, defence, maritime security, digital infrastructure, and people-to-people ties.
The discussion underscored the historical and cultural bonds that unite India and Mauritius, with both leaders acknowledging the unique relationship built on shared values and heritage. PM Modi reiterated India’s support for Mauritius’ development priorities, aligning with Vision MAHASAGAR and the Neighbourhood First policy, which places special emphasis on partnerships with Indian Ocean region countries. Dr. Ramgoolam expressed appreciation for India’s steadfast assistance and reaffirmed his commitment to advancing bilateral ties for the mutual benefit of both nations.
Earlier in March 2025, Prime Minister Modi visited Mauritius as the chief guest at the country’s National Day celebrations, marking his second such appearance since 2015. During this visit, President Dharambeer Gokhool awarded PM Modi the 'Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean' (GCSK), the highest civilian honour in Mauritius, making him the first Indian leader to receive this distinction. The visit also saw both governments elevate their relationship to an “enhanced strategic partnership,” focusing on defence, maritime cooperation, and socio-economic development.
India’s role as a trusted partner in Mauritius’ development was highlighted through ongoing initiatives such as the provision of defence equipment, capacity-building programs, and support for maritime security infrastructure. The two countries have also collaborated on major projects, including the construction of a new airstrip and jetty at Agalega island, and the establishment of a National Maritime Information Sharing Center. These initiatives reflect the deepening strategic alignment and shared vision for security and growth in the region.
