On May 14, 2025, a powerful earthquake measuring between 6.0 and 6.3 magnitude struck near the Greek island of Kasos in the southeastern Aegean Sea. The tremor, occurring at a depth of approximately 62.5 kilometers, was felt across Crete, Rhodes, Karpathos, and as far as Israel and Egypt.
In response, Greece's Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection issued a precautionary tsunami warning. Residents and tourists in affected areas, including Crete, Kasos, and Karpathos, received emergency alerts advising them to move away from coastal regions and seek higher ground.
Despite the earthquake's strength, no significant damage or casualties have been reported. Efthymios Lekkas, head of Greece’s Earthquake Planning and Protection Organisation, noted that the quake's depth mitigated its potential destructiveness.
Greece is situated on the boundary of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates, making it one of Europe's most seismically active regions. Earlier this year, the Santorini-Amorgos zone experienced over 7,700 tremors, highlighting ongoing geological instability.
While the tsunami warning has been lifted, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. Travelers are advised to stay informed through official channels and adhere to local guidance.
