In a remarkable political turnaround, Canada's Liberal Party, under the leadership of Mark Carney, secured victory in the 2025 federal election, marking a fourth consecutive term in office. Carney, a former central banker and political newcomer, assumed the role of Prime Minister following Justin Trudeau's resignation amid declining public support and internal party challenges. Despite initial forecasts predicting a significant defeat, the Liberals managed to regain public favor, largely attributed to Carney's steady leadership.
The Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, faced a significant setback, with Poilievre losing his long-held seat in Carleton, Ontario. The New Democratic Party (NDP) experienced its worst-ever performance, leading to the resignation of its leader, Jagmeet Singh.
Carney stressed in his victory speech that Canada must reclaim its sovereignty and lessen its dependency on the United States, claiming that the period of growing trade integration led by the United States is gone. He reaffirmed Canada's commitment to NATO and promised to create new lines of trade and security.
With the Conservatives and Liberals winning more than 80% of the vote, the election also demonstrated a shift towards political polarization and a drop in support for smaller parties. The Liberal Party, which had been predicted to lose the election only months before, has made a huge return with Carney's win. Carney's leadership will play a crucial role in resolving internal conflicts and redefining Canada's foreign policy as it advances.
