Rescue teams in Indonesia have been racing to save Juliana Marins, a 26-year-old Brazilian hiker, who has been trapped for three days inside the steep walls of Mount Rinjani, an active volcano on Lombok island. Marins fell from a cliff near the crater at around 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 21, while hiking with a group that included a local guide. According to her family, she had asked to rest, but the guide continued with the group, and upon returning, discovered she had fallen more than 1,600 feet down the volcano’s interior.
Initial rescue efforts began after other hikers heard her cries for help and spotted her on a ledge via drone footage. The footage showed Marins wedged on a rock at a depth of about 500 meters, appearing motionless. Rescue teams attempted to reach her, but progress was severely hampered by treacherous terrain, thick fog, and rapidly changing weather conditions. Helicopter access was ruled out due to the dangerous environment, and rescuers had to retreat multiple times for their own safety.
Despite the obstacles, authorities deployed experienced guides and rescue personnel equipped with ropes and climbing gear. On Monday, teams managed to descend to about 350 meters but were forced to stop after encountering large overhangs and unstable rock formations. Family updates on social media expressed growing desperation, urging authorities to intensify efforts. The Indonesian park service confirmed that rescue teams remained on standby, committed to continuing their attempts as conditions allowed.
Throughout the ordeal, conflicting reports emerged about whether Marins had received supplies such as food and water. The family’s Instagram account stated that initial claims of successful delivery were incorrect, adding to their distress. Meanwhile, Marins’ plight drew international attention, with her social media following surging as people worldwide watched the dramatic rescue attempt unfold.
