A Bangladesh Air Force training aircraft tragically crashed into the campus of Milestone School and College in Dhaka's densely populated Uttara area on Monday, July 21, 2025, resulting in the deaths of at least 20 people and leaving over 150 injured. The devastating incident, which occurred during school hours, has sent shockwaves across the nation, with initial reports indicating a high number of student casualties.
The ill-fated aircraft, identified as an F-7 BGI, a Chinese-made training jet, took off for a routine training mission at approximately 1:06 PM local time. Shortly after, it experienced a "technical malfunction," according to the military. Eyewitnesses described a harrowing scene as the jet plummeted, reportedly striking near the main gate of a school building where classes were in session. The impact caused a massive fire and sent plumes of thick smoke billowing into the sky, leading to widespread panic and chaos.
Emergency services, including fire brigades and military rescue teams, immediately rushed to the site to commence extensive rescue operations. Many students were reportedly trapped inside the damaged building, and rescue personnel worked tirelessly to evacuate the injured. The injured, many suffering from severe burn injuries, were transported to various hospitals, with medical facilities quickly becoming overwhelmed by the influx of casualties. Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) platoons were also deployed to assist with the rescue and ensure security at the crash site.
The Bangladesh Air Force has launched a high-level investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash. While a "technical malfunction" has been cited, the full extent of the issue remains under investigation. The pilot, Flight Lieutenant Mohammad Toukir Islam, was among those killed in the crash, with military officials commending his reported efforts to divert the aircraft away from more densely populated areas. The tragedy has drawn condolences from across the globe, with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressing his deep sorrow and offering India's solidarity and support to Bangladesh during this difficult time.
