In a heartbreaking aviation disaster that took the lives of over 200 people, a 40-year-old British man named Vishwash Kumar Ramesh has been identified as the only survivor of Air India Flight AI171, which tragically went down shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad on Thursday, June 12, 2025. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, bound for London and carrying 230 passengers along with 12 crew members, crashed into the Meghani Nagar residential area, striking a doctors' hostel and causing extensive damage. Ramesh, who was seated in 11A, suffered injuries to his chest, eyes, and feet, but thankfully, he is now out of immediate danger and is recovering in a local hospital.
Recalling the harrowing moments, Ramesh described hearing a loud noise just thirty seconds after takeoff, followed by the plane's rapid descent and the subsequent crash. "I was terrified. I stood up and ran. There were bodies all around me," he chillingly recounted from his hospital bed, noting that debris from the plane was scattered everywhere. He managed to escape the wreckage before being helped into an ambulance and rushed for medical care. His miraculous survival has become a symbol of hope amid the deep sorrow enveloping the nation.
Authorities, including Ahmedabad Police Commissioner G.S. Malik, have confirmed Ramesh's identity as the lone survivor. While the investigation into the crash's cause is ongoing, initial reports indicate that the aircraft struggled with insufficient engine thrust and failed to gain altitude before issuing a Mayday call and losing signal. The impact resulted in a massive fire and thick smoke, and rescue operations are still underway to recover bodies from the devastated area, which is a busy residential neighborhood.
Vishwash Kumar Ramesh had been visiting family in India and was on his way back to the UK with his older brother, Ajay Kumar Ramesh, 45, who is still unaccounted for. His family in Leicester, UK, expressed their shock and disbelief, with his young relatives struggling to comprehend the tragedy. As India mourns the tragic loss of life, including that of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, Ramesh's incredible story of survival stands as a testament to the unforeseen possibilities in the face of unimaginable catastrophe.
