Amazon MGM Studios has officially unveiled the first teaser for Spaceballs 2, confirming the long-awaited sequel is set for release in 2027. The trailer, which dropped on June 12, 2025, features a special message from Mel Brooks, who returns both as producer and in his iconic role as Yogurt, the film’s beloved parody of Yoda. The teaser leans into the film’s satirical roots, poking fun at the endless parade of sequels and reboots that have dominated Hollywood since the original Spaceballs debuted nearly four decades ago.
Directing duties for Spaceballs 2 have been handed to Josh Greenbaum, known for his work on Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar, with a script penned by Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, and Josh Gad. Gad, who is also expected to star, brings a fresh comedic energy to the project, though his casting has yet to be officially confirmed. The film is described by Amazon as “A Non-Prequel Non-Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements Franchise Expansion Film,” signaling a blend of nostalgia and new directions for the franchise.
A major highlight of the announcement is the return of original cast members. Bill Pullman will reprise his role as Lone Star, and Rick Moranis is confirmed to return as Dark Helmet, marking a rare comeback for the actor who has largely stepped away from acting in recent years. Their involvement, alongside Brooks, ensures that the sequel will maintain continuity with the original’s unique comedic style and character dynamics.
The teaser also hints at the film’s plot direction, with the tagline “The Schwartz Awakens,” suggesting a playful riff on the recent Star Wars sequel trilogy. While details remain under wraps, the film is expected to introduce a new generation of characters learning the ways of the Schwartz, while classic figures like Yogurt, Lone Star, and Dark Helmet guide the next phase of intergalactic parody.
